We went to Trier for the first time in October. Trier is believed to be the oldest city in Germany. It dates back to 16 B.C. and was called Augusta Treverorum by the Romans. Before the Romans claimed it, the city was occupied by Celts. There are some amazing historical sights in Trier, and we didn't get to see all of them in our one day there. But, it's only about an hour's drive from here, so we'll definitely be going back. I took a ridiculous number of pictures again, so this will be a five part post.
The first sight we saw was the city gate, Porta Nigra, pictured above. It was built around 180 A.D. It is made of sandstone, but has been turned black over the years, hence it's name. It was so amazing to walk through a structure that was built almost two thousand years ago! |
